Introduction
– Slingmax® Twin-Path® slings are known for being extremely strong, for being lightweight, weighing 90% less than wire rope slings, for being durable and repairable, but they’re not known for being inexpensive. Today we are going to break down the cost and help you decide if they’re worth the price.
What Affects the Cost of a Twin-Path® Sling?
– I am Greg D’Elia, I am the Vice President of Engineering Quality for Slingmax® Rigging Solutions. I’ve been in the lifting and rigging industry for about 10 years doing product development, testing.
The cost of a Twin-Path® sling is going to be significantly more than other types of slings, especially things like web slings. Because it is a high-performance fiber roundsling, you’re paying for certain features that are not available in that type of rigging.
The main factors that affect the price are the capacity and length of the sling that you’re going to order. All the Twin-Path® slings are custom-made to customer specifications. So, if they need a larger capacity or a longer sling, that’s going to make the sling more expensive.
How Much Do Twin-Path® Slings Cost?
A very small sling that maybe is only rated for 10,000 pounds, may be a couple hundred dollars. Where we have very large slings that are rated for 800,000 pounds could be tens of thousands of dollars for one sling.
What Are You Paying For? Features of a Twin-Path® Sling
K-Spec® Core Fiber
So some of the features that you get on a Twin-Path® high-performance round sling are first the high-performance K-Spec® fiber that’s inside.
Dual Covermax® Jacket
We have the Covermax® double cover. All the Twin-Path® slings are equipped with the Check-Fast® inspection system.
Check-Fast® Inspection System
If you were to overload this sling, this EWI would retract and let you know that something went wrong. You could send it back to your Slingmax® dealer. They can inspect the sling. If it’s still good, they’ll proof load it and get it back out in the field.
On a typical roundsling without the Check-Fast® inspection system, you have no idea if that sling was overloaded. So if you are on a crew and someone else was using your rigging, maybe they overloaded it and they put it right back in the box, you could be using something that’s been compromised.
Rifle Cover® Technology
And also Twin-Path® slings feature Rifle Cover® technology. The core yarns actually twist as they go into the sling, giving you 70% more strength compared to a normal roundsling.
How Does the Price of a Twin-Path® Compare to a Typical Roundsling?
A typical high-performance roundsling, a Twin-Path® sling is going to be slightly more expensive, usually 20%-30% more expensive, but it has the features that you’re not going to see in your typical roundsling.
How Does the Twin-Path® Compare to Other Types of Rigging?
There’s significant advantages to using a Slingmax® Twin-Path® sling. It has elongation of less than 1% when being used, so it’s going to behave a lot the same as steel rigging. Compared to steel, you have a good deal of weight savings. It’s more ergonomic and easy to use for the riggers. It’s one 10th of the weight.
Compared to something like a web sling, the Twin-Path® sling is very low stretch. It’s not going to bounce or shift when you’re doing the lift.
Is a Twin-Path® Sling Worth the Price?
If someone’s concerned about the price of a Twin-Path® sling, I would say they should look at the total value of, of the rigging over time. If you buy a less expensive sling, it’s going to wear out faster. A lot of times they’re not repairable, they don’t have the dealer network where you can have it easily repaired.
A Twin-Path® sling, if you follow the directions, read it correctly, you could have it for many years. We get slings that are over 10 years old coming in for repair on a regular basis.
Over the lifetime of the sling it’s going to be less expensive when you can use the Twin-Path® sling for many years versus cheaper rigging that is more of a throwaway item. Plus, we have decades of testing that we’ve done at Slingmax® to ensure that it’s going to perform the way we say it’s going to perform. We’ve broke hundreds of Twin-Path® slings to make sure that they will meet the minimum capacity.
At the end of the day, the rigging is a small part of the overall cost of a job being done, and if you can have rigging that has testing behind it, has the the features that are in a Twin-Path® sling overall, you’re going to get the job done faster, safer, and more effectively.
